Autistic burnout is physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion, which can occur when an autistic person has been coping with prolonged stress, often from navigating environments that don’t support their needs. It can be linked to masking, sensory overload, or sustained social and cognitive demands. People experiencing burnout might notice increased sensory sensitivities, increased difficulty with communication or daily tasks, and a need for more rest or withdrawal. Unlike general stress, autistic burnout can take significant time to recover from, and it highlights the importance of understanding and self-compassion.
How can our sessions help?
We begin by demystifying the neuroscience behind autism and autistic burnout; how it develops and what is happening in your brain when you experience autistic burnout. This supports you to gain back a sense of control over your thoughts and emotions and in turn your behaviours. We then take a paced approach that works for you, exploring various compassion focused tools to soothe your stressed out nervous system, solution focused tools and techniques to strengthen your confidence and self esteem, and CBT tools to build understanding and break down challenges into smaller more manageable steps.
